A home can never have too many coasters, and quilted coasters add beautiful texture and daily utility without using very much fabric or time. These coasters are made using the simple (but visually impressive) technique of inset circle piecing. They are both fun to sew and fun to use. The maker can decide between hand quilting or machine quilting, making this project endlessly customizable and personal. Because the coasters use so little fabric, they're also a great way to use up scraps. Try making a set of four coasters sewn in contrasting tonal fabrics to give as a housewarming or holiday gift. In my version, I made a set of "sunrise" coasting using tonal linen in warm colors, and used machine quilting to illustrate the shape of the sun on the horizon.
